Season's Greetings.

Writer's picture: Paul GaultPaul Gault

Christmas is coming and the thoughts of all keen anglers turn to the problem of what to include in the Santa list. Last year I decided to dabble in Tenkara fly fishing which proved to be an interesting distraction through the season. This time round I've been toying with the idea of LRF ( "light rock fishing" ) techniques. Although usually associated with the salt I see no reason why it wouldn't translate well to small and medium sized rivers. The rods are typically 6 or 7 feet and designed to cast the lightest of spinners and lures; 0.5 - 5g being a common rating. Match this up with a nice little reel and suitable line and I think it would be a good setup for the size of trout we most frequently encounter on the Braid - but, as with Tenkara, I probably wouldn't risk it if there were salmon about! Just have to see what Santa brings. After all, you can't have too many rods - can you?

Merry Christmas.

River Braid. Winter 2010.

No, it's not Alaska, but our own wee River Braid

almost frozen solid on Christmas Day 2010. The

lowest temperature I recorded during that spell

was minus 17 degrees C! Looks picturesque, but

I'm not keen to repeat the experience this year.

As a kid I always used to wonder why Gran hated

Winter. Now I know.
