A pleasant start to 2022.

The first day of the season dawned crisp and frosty, so I waited until lunchtime before wandering down to the river, hoping that the rising mercury might trigger a hatch. As things turned out there was virtually no surface activity and only an occasional lonely olive fluttered by. A few tentative searching casts with an Adams produced no response whatsoever, but switching to a black and silver spider tied on a size 14 heavy grubber did the trick, as did a partridge and yellow. These flies soon accounted for a dozen juvenile trout, but unfortunately nothing big enough to justify a photo. Still, matters not. It was good to be out on the best day of the year so far - And the snowdrops were nice.
